Mirwaiz, Kashmiri Pandit delegation discuss reconciliation; agree to form inter-community committee

New Delhi, Feb 01: In a significant step towards communal reconciliation, a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits representing the Jammu and Kashmir Peace Forum met Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at  New Delhi.

During the meeting the discussion centered on fostering inter-community cooperation and addressing long-standing grievances to pave the way for a peaceful and inclusive future in Jammu and Kashmir.

As per the handout issued here, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq acknowledged the collective suffering endured by both Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits over the decades, particularly the painful exodus of the Pandit community in 1989-90.

He reiterated his consistent stance that the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits is a humanitarian imperative that must be addressed with sincerity and urgency.

Mirwaiz said that Kashmir was incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits and the suffering of Kashmiri Pandits needs to be addressed earnestly.

"I have repeatedly emphasized this in my discourses. The younger generation must be made aware of Kashmir’s rich composite culture," the statement reads.

The Kashmiri Pandit delegation spoke candidly about the challenges of displacement, including hardships endured in exile, financial struggles, and the emotional toll of being uprooted from their homeland.

They also underscored the historical ties of solidarity between Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits, emphasizing that their mutual coexistence has always been integral to Kashmir’s social fabric. The delegation recognised the influence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, they urged him to take the lead in confidence-building measures that could restore trust and communal harmony.

During the meeting it was decided that a inter-community committee will be formed chaired by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq which will represent all communities in Kashmir.

As per the handout issued here, the committee will focus on facilitating the safe and dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits besides addressing concerns of other minority communities.

The committee will encourage economic development, trade, and employment generation besides preserving and promoting Kashmir’s diverse cultural heritage.

"The committee will also strengthen cooperation among young professionals from different communities," the statement reads.

It reads that the committee will explore avenues for government-supported rehabilitation of displaced Pandits, including the development of inclusive residential settlements to ease their reintegration into Kashmiri society.

During the meeting, Mirwaiz has reaffirmed his commitment to actively advancing the reconciliation process.

The statement reads that both sides agreed that sustained dialogue and community-driven initiatives would serve as a pathway to healing, unity, and long-term peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
