Srinagar, Feb 26: In a surprising move, the authorities in the Kashmir University (KU) have said that there was no ban on the campus politics and the students' association even as there was no need for such activities in the varsity.

In a reply to the RTI application filed by the students leader Nasir Khuehami, Chief Proctor of the Kashmir University has said thatthe varsity has not issued any circular or formal order which bans students union.

"However. the Student's Union was banned by the University in 2009 following the verbal directions of the then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi," the official document reads.

The RTI applicant sought details whether any official order was issued to ban the on campus politics or to impose ban on Student's Associations in the varsity.

The KU reply reads that the administration being mindful of the security scenario in Kashmir banned the union as there was apprehension that the students may be easily influenced by people with ulterior motive, "potentially leading to destabilisation and jeopardising" the academic environment of the campus.

"Further, there is no need as such for any student's union as the University has a transparent system in place for redressal of the grievances of students," reads the reply signed by the Cheif Proctor of the University.

It further reads that the a "dedicated" students grievance cell has been set up to receive the representation from students and provide redressal in a time bound manner.

"Besides, each department has a committee to address the students' issues and concerns at the departmental level," it reads.

Meanwhile, the authorities at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) Awantpora have also said there was no order issued to ban student activism in the campus.

"University has not officially banned any student activism or student politics. However, the university is required to comply with the orders issued by the UT government from time to time," the reply reads.

Similarly, the Jammu University has also said that there was no restriction on campus politics or student association in the varisty.

The Central University Jammu (CUJ) in its reply to the RTI application has said that no order or circular instructions were received from the government to ban the student activism or student politics in educational institution.
