Jammu, Feb 28: The faculty at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri, on Friday started a pen down strike after the teachers' association president was suspended without even being served a mandatory show-cause notice.
Sources said Dr Parvez Abdullah, Assistant Professor of Management Studies Department at BGSBU was suspended vide order dated February 21, 2025 and attached with Kishtwar nursing college.
Abdullah is president of BGSBU Teachers Association which has held many meetings with the University's Chancellor previously over the "prevalent corruption in the varsity" as well as the "deteriorating governance in the institution".
The faculty allege that Abdullah was targeted for "exposing corruption in the system".
His suspension comes days after a senior JKAS officer, Shahbaz Mirza, was suddenly removed as BGSBU Registrar, and was replaced by present Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, in a surprising move that drew sharp reactions from Rajouri civil society members.
Shahbaz was credited with streamlining the University's administrative management to a large extent during his short stint in the Varsity.
Sources said the Association is contemplating going on a hunger strike from Monday.
The Association said they will not let this selective targeting of teachers happen.
The Association said the suspension order of Abdullah was aimed at muzzling the voices against corruption and the demand for its revocation is being backed by all teachers on the campus.
The Association is also seeking a Vigilance and Crime Branch inquiry into recent promotion of a teacher from Nursing faculty as associate professor allegedly in gross violation of UGC norms, while linking the president's suspension as an attempt to silence voices against the illegal promotion case.
"We have apprised our VC and Registrar about our legitimate demand. How can a teacher be suspended without even being given a notice to show-cause?" the Association members asked.
"This suspension is illegal. How can a senior assistant professor of the Department from Management faculty be attached with non-subject specialisation Nursing that too under a junior?".
The Association, which has already started pen down strike, has given time till Monday to the University authorities to revoke Abdullah's suspension unconditionally or else face the hunger strike.
Civil society members from Rajouri have also sought revocation of suspension order of Parvez Abdullah.
Several faculty members said that the President was suspended as they were sure that the Association will seek Vigilance and Crime Branch enquiry over gross violation of UGC norms when the case cited above was in court.
