BGSBU suspension row: Mehbooba seeks Govt intervention as hunger strike continues

Srinagar March 4: Former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir and President Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday questioned the suspension of an Assistant Professor in Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), Rajouri.

Mehbooba Mufti to her official X and wrote that the suspension of Dr. Parvez Abdullah from Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has escalated into a major issue with both teaching and non-teaching staff going on an indefinite strike in his support.

“This has become a pressing concern as it is significantly impacting the academic environment and the overall educational system at the university,” her post on X reads.

Mehbooba Mufti said that many conspiracy theories are making rounds which threaten the very existence of this precious university.

“The administration must clarify the reasons behind his suspension and make them public,” she wrote.

She tagged J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in her post on X which reads that transparency and accountability were crucial to understand why such action was taken against the assistant professor.

Notably, faculty’s strike entered third consecutive day at the BGSBU campus.

The faculty last Friday started an indefinite hunger strike after the teachers’ association president was suspended without even being served a mandatory show-cause notice.

Dr Parvez Abdullah, Assistant Professor of Management Studies Department at BGSBU was suspended vide order dated February 21, 2025 and attached with Kishtwar nursing college.

Abdullah is president of BGSBU Teachers Association which has held many meetings with the University’s Chancellor previously over the “prevalent corruption in the varsity” as well as the “deteriorating governance in the institution”.

The faculty alleged that Abdullah was targeted for “exposing corruption in the system”.

Notably, Dr. Abdullah’s suspension comes barely a month after the university authorities issued an official clearance in writing, certifying that “as per our records, there is no vigilance/disciplinary inquiry pending against him in the university.”

However, contrary to the experience certificate issued by varsity last year, the Vice Chancellor BGSBU Prof. Jawaid Iqbal Monday said the decision to suspend the Assistant Professor of the varsity was taken while following due procedure, based on multiple complaints registered against the individual in 2021.
