Srinagar, March 18: Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) has apprehended a social media user accused of disseminating extremist content aimed at disturbing public order.
Acting on credible intelligence and during routine social media surveillance, CIK identified and arrested Showkat Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Ahmad Dar, a resident of Doodh Mohalla, Shalimar, Srinagar. As per the official handout issued here, Dar was operating a radical Facebook handle under the name ‘Shaddy Kashmir Dryfruits’ to glorify terrorism and incite anti-national sentiments among young minds.
"Upon receiving intelligence inputs, a swift investigation was launched to track down the suspect," the handout reads.
It reads that efforts to locate Dar were initially complicated due to his frequent movement and attempts to evade detection.
"However, a well-coordinated operation led to his arrest, along with the seizure of his electronic device," it reads.
As per the handout, a preliminary inspection of his digital footprint revealed incriminating material, including a video of slain terrorist commander Zakir Musa and other extremist propaganda.
"Dar is a repeat offender with a history of involvement in radical activities," it reads.
The handout reads that Dar was previously arrested in 2019 by Harwan Police Station in connection with stone-pelting incidents.
In 2022, he was again detained by the Cyber Police Station Srinagar for spreading radical content online.
Security and intelligence agencies in Jammu and Kashmir, in coordination with special monitoring units of social media companies, have intensified efforts to curb radical propaganda.
"Social media service providers have established dedicated units to monitor and flag extremist content, which is promptly reported to security agencies for action," it reads.
The handout reads that investigations are ongoing to ascertain Dar’s role and identify possible associates.
"Further legal proceedings will be initiated as per the provisions of the law," it reads.
