Srinagar, April 04: The ruling alliance partners in Jammu and Kashmir, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday passed two resolutions while issuing a stern warning to the Government of India (GoI) against undermining the democratic mandate in the J&K Union Territory.

The high-level crucial meeting was convened at the official residence of the Deputy Chief Minister in Srinagar.

The meeting was convened in the wake of the recent mass transfer of 48 JKAS officers by the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

The meeting was attended by around 46 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

The transfers ordered by LG has triggered political concerns within the alliance, prompting speculation over its future strategy.

Soon after the meeting concluded on Friday afternoon, National Conference (NC) Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, flanked by Congress leader and MLA Bandipora, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, addressed a joint press briefing.

“The meeting unanimously passed two resolutions—one opposing the controversial Waqf Bill passed in Parliament, which we believe is against the interests of Muslims and other minorities in the country, and the other demanding that the Government of India respect the people’s overwhelming mandate to the NC-led government in Jammu and Kashmir,” Sadiq said.

He added that the alliance’s appeal to the Centre was not a request, but a final warning.

“We are saying this one last time. Respect the people’s verdict. Do not misinterpret our cooperation as weakness. We want to send a clear message. Do not push us to the wall,” he said.

Sadiq emphasized that the elected government must be allowed to function without undue interference, asserting that the democratic will of the people cannot be compromised.

Congress MLA Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, who was also present at the meeting, said that both short-term and long-term political and administrative issues were thoroughly discussed during the deliberations.

“While some senior leaders were unable to attend, I was officially mandated to represent the Congress along with other leaders,” he said.

He said the congress party will fully support the leader of the House and endorse the resolutions passed.

"There is complete consensus among the MLAs on matters such as the Waqf Bill and the need to uphold the public mandate. These concerns must be addressed through constructive dialogue with the Centre,” Bhat said.
