Uri, May 09: It was around 9PM on Thursday when a family of nine was fleeing shelling in Razarwani village, Uri.
Their vehicle was struck by Pakistan’s targeted bombardment, killing a 40-year-old woman and injuring three other family members.
“We were waiting for the vehicle to escape the village and reach safety. Who would have thought that in our search for life, we would lose a life?” said Mohammad Shafi, whose sister-in-law died in the shelling. “This cross-border firing has destroyed us—our well-being, our future.”
“We’ve witnessed such shelling since birth, but this time, we are terrified, disturbed, and utterly helpless,” he added. “For days, we’ve been trapped in this nightmare, wondering if we’ll live to see the next moment, the next dawn. There’s no difference between day and night here—every second is filled with fear. We look at each other’s faces, all asking the same question: Will we survive till morning? Will we see our children again?”
Tasveer Begum, the sister of the deceased, recounted the trauma: “We were screaming, crying, consumed by fear—a fear that will haunt us forever. We lost our sister, our family. Who will take care of her daughters? Who will care for her husband, an asthma patient? She was an Aaya worker, preparing midday meals for schoolchildren—how will her family survive now? How will her daughters move forward?”
Tasveer also appealed to the Modi-led government: “Do not forget my sister’s family. They have no one left to care for them.”
“How can dreams shatter at this age? How can I live without my mother? How?” Sanam (16), the youngest daughter of the deceased, sat in a dark corner, tears streaming down her face. “We left home for Baramulla, searching for safety—but before we could reach there, I lost my mother.”
Her voice trembled as she pleaded, “Please, bring my mother back…”
“Why are we being bombarded? What is our fault? Why are we always affected? We have dreams of becoming doctors, engineers, and responsible citizens who can represent Kashmir on national and international platforms. Please, stop this war on innocent souls and allow us to live in peace.”
Khitji Begum, a grieving relative, cried out in despair: “What has happened? One of her daughter’s was supposed to marry next month—who will prepare her as a bride now? This is devastation. We are helpless.”
Addressing Prime Minister Modi, she said, “Modi ji, whatever you’ve done, we stand with you—but please don’t leave us helpless even within our own families. How do we live without our loved ones? What is our fault?”
“We are affected, victimized, and helpless. We don’t want to lose our loved ones in this shelling and these bombings.”
“In our struggle to save our children, our parents, and our homes, we lost another sister last night—she died trying to protect her children,” said Aslam, a local resident.“Fear has seeped into our veins. We’ve even forgotten how to eat—such is the terror that grips us.”
“We have full faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji—please save us from this horror. We are peace-loving Indians. We want to live. Please, don’t take away our happiness.”
“This cross-border shelling must stop now. We don’t want to suffer any longer. We have already lost generations, and we cannot bear to witness this destruction anymore.”
The authorities evacuated as many families as possible to Baramulla and its outskirts for their safety.
According to details available around 50 families have been accommodated at Gurudwara Cheivi Patshai Baramulla.
District President of Gurudwara Cheivi Patshai Baramulla Paramjeet Singh said they stand with the fellow people who are going through this difficult phase. "We have opened our Gurudwara for them, prioritizing their safety and well-being," Paramjeet Singh said.
“We are all brothers, and at this stage, we will not let our people down, no matter which groups they belong to. We are all standing tall," he said.
