GMC Handwara achieves milestone with first THR surgery on 18-year-old girl

Kupwara, June 12: In a significant development, the Department of Orthopaedics at Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara performed first Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgery on an 18-year-old girl suffering from an untreated hip dislocation for the past 11 months.

The surgery was carried out by a dedicated team of doctors led by Professor Dr Javid Ahmad Bhat Head Department of Orthopaedics, along with Assistant Professors Dr Nisar Ahmad and Dr Ahsan Wani. Senior Resident (SR) Dr Zubair and OT Technician Abdul Rouf ably assisted this critical procedure.

The anaesthesia team was headed by Professor Abdul Qyoom, supported by Dr Masarat ensuring safe and smooth conduct of the surgery. Supportive services were managed under the supervision of OT Supervisor Habib Ullah, assisted by Farooq Ahmad and other technical staff.


Dr Javid Head Department of Orthopaedics while talking to Greater Kashmir said that the successful surgery was a testament to the growing capabilities of GMC Handwara in advanced orthopaedic procedures.

"Despite limited resources, we are committed to deliver quality care that matches national standards. We will continue with the same spirit and serve the people with dedication and excellence," he added.

He said that the surgery would have costed over 3 lakh to the patient if carried out in any private hospital. "We made sure that the surgery is carried out at Associated District Hospital GMC Handwara. Without the proactive and unwavering support of Principal, GMC Handwara Professor Khurshid Ahmad Wani, this critical procedure was not possible," Dr Javid added.

The family of the patient and people of Handwara have hailed the efforts of doctors who carried out the procedure.
