GDC Ganderbal organises 'flower show' to mark 79th Independence Day celebrations

Ganderbal, Aug 12: The Department of Botany, Government Degree College Ganderbal, on Tuesday organised a mega Flower Show in connection with the 79th Independence Day celebrations.

Titled as "fusion of nature's colours and nation's pride", the event, held at picturesque Botanical Garden along the banks of river Sindh, showcased flower stalls that included the world famous Japanese Oshibana and Ikebana Arts along with cut flowers, dried flower arrangements, floral accessories, herbarium, floral resin art and floaters, among others. A big attraction was Bonsai Art that included a 35 year old ornamental pomegranate and a 20 year old pagoda tree. 

College Principal, Professor Fouzia Fatima praised the Department of Botany for organising the student-centric activity. She said students must explore opportunities offered by the plant sciences and contribute towards 'Viksit Bharat@2047.'

Head of the Department, Prof Irfana Amin Qureshi, said the department is working hard to train it's students to earn their livelihood through various entrepreneurship endeavors related to plants.

Dr Shabana Aslam, senior faculty, said the event was an attempt by the department to make the students aware about the scope of Botany as a subject and help them think beyond the government jobs. 

Prof Tabasum Habib from the department of Botany supervised the event management while Dr Sheikh Afreen Rehman, HoD Agricultural Technology explained how students can relate their subject to the agricultural sciences. 

The department also showcased the talent of its students who had prepared bouquets, flags and badges in tricolor, all made from fresh flowers. The students had also prepared charts on Independence Day to express their patriotic feelings.
