Awantipora, Sept 11: The Islamic University of Science
and Technology (IUST) concluded a two-day training and capacity building workshop
on integrated water management and flood risk reduction.
The event was jointly organized by the Centre for
Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR), Department of Environment, Sustainability and
Climate Change (DESCC), and Department of Planning and Geomatics, IUST, in
collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management, Relief,
Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (DDMRRR), Government of J&K.
The second day featured brainstorming sessions chaired
by Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor, IUST, where participants deliberated
on diverse aspects of flood risk reduction.
Discussions were led by Prof. Javed Hussain Mir on
strategies for addressing urban flooding; Dr. G. N. Qasba, Former Commissioner
SMC, on enhancing community preparedness and coordination; Prof. Humayun Rashid
on the role of wetlands in flood mitigation and groundwater recharge; and Prof.
Muzaffar Ahmad on bridging gaps in preparedness and planning for future flood
management.
A concluding panel discussion, chaired by Prof. Romshoo,
reflected on lessons from the 2014 floods and emphasized the need for an
integrated approach that blends scientific research, infrastructural
development, policy support, and community engagement for building a disaster-resilient
Jammu and Kashmir.
A technical session by Dr. Yasir Altaf (DESCC) provided
a historical overview of floods in Kashmir, underscoring recurring devastations
and persistent risks post-2014.
The workshop ended with a valedictory session chaired by
Prof. Romshoo, during which certificates were distributed in presence of Snowber
Jameel, Deputy Secretary DDMRRR, and other dignitaries, marking the successful
completion of this important initiative.
