Says varsity is committed to strengthen facilities, create
campus that removes barriers rather than reinforces them

Srinagar, Dec 3: The
Special Cell under the aegis of the Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW),
University of Kashmir (KU), organised a day-long programme at the Main Campus
to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The event aimed to promote
a deeper understanding of disability issues, encourage respect for the dignity
and rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwD), and raise awareness on creating
inclusive academic and social environments.
In her message, Vice-Chancellor
KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said an inclusive institution must ensure that every
student, regardless of ability, feels supported, respected, and able to
participate fully.
"Our commitment is to
strengthen facilities and create a campus that removes barriers rather than
reinforces them," she said.
Dean Academic Affairs KU,
Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, said that the University continues to prioritize
student support systems and added that efforts must focus on accessibility,
empathy, and collaborative problem-solving.
Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer
Iqbal, said that the observance is a reminder to recognise the needs of people
with special needs beyond symbolic gestures.
He said that sustained
initiatives and policy-level interventions are essential for meaningful
inclusion.
Earlier, in his welcome
address, Dean DSW KU, Prof. Pervez Ahmad, said that the University will
continue to expand support services under the Special Cell and work closely
with stakeholders to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
The programme included the
distribution of aids and appliances among PwD, panel discussions, and technical
sessions led by experts working in disability support, rehabilitation, and
inclusive education.
The event was coordinated
by Shaheel Mohammad, Coordinator, Special Cell, DSW KU.
The event was attended by various heads of departments, faculty members, PwD participants, special educators, invited experts and students.
