Srinagar, Oct 22: The Divisional Administration Kashmir Wednesday issued a public advisory urging people to exercise heightened caution to prevent deaths due to asphyxiation and fire incident in view of the ensuing winters.

As per the advisory issued by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshu Garg, it has been stated that the repeated observations have revealed that most fire incidents occur due to electrical short circuits, use of substandard appliances, and unsafe storage of  flammable materials within  homes.

"Citizens are therefore  advised to strictly adhere to the precautionary measures and ensure that all heating appliances, stoves, and LPG cooking units are switched off before going to sleep or when leaving home," it reads.

In the advisory, people have been urged to hand traditional fire pots (Kangri) with utmost care, particularly at night.

"Do not store dry grass, wood, or other combustible materials inside  or adjacent to residential premises. Such materials should be kept safely in isolated and ventilated areas," the advisory reads.

The divisional administration has urged people to ensure that all wiring, plugs, sockets and fuses are in good condition and free from damage.

"Get internal wiring and load capacity inspected by a qualified electrician before winter. Avoid the use of faulty or substandard electrical appliances and ensure that only lSI-marked devices are used," the advisory reads.

People have been advised to exercise caution while operating high-wattage room heaters and electric blankets ."Never leave them unattended or switched on. Use quality MCBs and Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCBs)," it reads.

The public has been advised to avoid overloading circuits or using extension cords for heavy electrical appliances like heaters and geysers.

"Switch off the main electrical supply when leaving home for a long duration. Keep electrical wires away from wet or hot surfaces. Maintain proper ventilation while using LPG or kerosene heaters," it reads.

People have been advised to exercise care while using Hamams to  prevent overheating or gas accumulation.

"When using gas heaters, ensure that the LPG cylinder is removed from the room before sleeping. Leakage can cause suffocation or explosive fires," it reads.

People have been asked advised to maintain clear escape routes and ensure water sources besides fire extinguishers are easily accessible.

"Keep at least one functional fire extinguisher in every household or business establishment and ensure all family members know how to use it," the advisory reads.

The Divisional Administration Kashmir has appealed to all residents to observe strict compliance with these safety guidelines, remain vigilant, and report any fire hazard to the nearest Fire and Emergency Services or Police Station.

"Public cooperation is essential to prevent tragic loss of lives and property during the winter season," it reads.
