CIR, IUST organise special session on communication as a transformative process

KS News Desk

Awantipora, Dec 18: The Centre for International Relations (CIR), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), organised a special lecture titled “Communication as a Transformative Process.”

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Kaushikee, Professor and former Director, Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Jamia Millia Islamia. The event was attended by faculty members, research scholars, and students of the Islamic University of Science and Technology.

In her address, Prof. Kaushikee spoke about communication not merely as the transmission of information, but as a fundamentally transformative process that actively shapes perceptions, structures relationships, and produces social realities. Drawing on her scholarly engagement with peace and conflict studies, she emphasised the ethical responsibilities embedded in communicative practices—particularly in contexts of conflict resolution and peacebuilding—where communication can either reproduce existing power asymmetries or contribute meaningfully to dialogue, reconciliation, and sustainable peace.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Syed Jaleel Hussain outlined the academic and research activities of the Centre. He underscored the analytical and normative significance of communication in contemporary social and political contexts, highlighting its central role in shaping discourse, mediating power relations, and addressing complex challenges in conflict and peace building processes.

The lecture was followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, during which participants engaged with the speaker on issues relating to communication, ethics, power, media, and their role in peacebuilding. The session was moderated by Dr. Shahnawaz Mantoo, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Javid Ahmad Ahanger.
