In a major concern, the Jal Shakti Department Ganderbal on Wednesday said that 37
samples out of 40 collected from different springs in Ganderbal and Srinagar were
found bacteriologically positive and advised people to refrain from consuming water
of these springs.
The Executive Engineer Jal Shakti department Ganderbal and rural Srinagar issued a public notice and advised the people to refrain from using spring water. The department urged the public to consume the tap water only.
"Jal Shakti (PHE) Rural Water Supply Division Ganderbal/Sgr carried out a massive drive of random sampling and testing of various springs across Ganderbal district, wherein it has been found that 37 out of 40 samples collected are Bacteriologically positive," the notice reads.
It reads that these springs have been rendered springs unfit for human consumption.
"Through the medium of this notice, general public of District Ganderbal and Rural Srinagar where spring water is used for drinking purposes by locals at their own level, are requested to refrain from using spring water for drinking purposes and instead use tap water only till further instructions, please," it reads.
The department has however stated that the spring water should be consumed only after boiling, "if at all it is to be used."
