A Leader of People: Memorable meeting with minister Satish Sharma

By Dr Aftab Jan

In the realm of politics, where power often distances leaders from the people, Satish Sharma Ji stands as a beacon of humility, service, and genuine leadership.

Many, upon assuming office, develop an air of arrogance, believing that authority elevates them above others. But Satish Sharma is different. Power has not changed him—it has only deepened his commitment to the people.

He remains kind, approachable, and deeply empathetic, treating the struggles of the people as his own.

A Leader Who Serves, Not Rules:

Recently, I had the privilege of meeting Minister Satish Sharma. Having interacted with numerous policymakers over the years, I expected the usual formalities. But instead, I was left genuinely impressed by Sharma’s unparalleled humility, kindness, and down-to-earth nature.

When a person becomes a minister, arrogance often follows. They start believing they have power, that they are above others.

But that is not the case with Satish Sharma. He is different. He is the same humble, kind-hearted person even after becoming a minister. He truly considers the people’s pain as his own.

These words are not mere compliments but reflect a reality that sets Satish Sharma apart from other politicians.

Instead of viewing power as a privilege, he sees it as a responsibility—a tool to serve and uplift the people of Jammu & Kashmir.

A Minister Who Understands the People’s Struggles:

Born into a Dogra Brahmin family, Sharma is the son of senior Congress leader Madan Lal Sharma. He pursued law at Dogra Law College (LL.B.) and later completed an MBA from the University of Wales (2008). His academic excellence and deep-rooted values made him a natural leader.

His journey to power was anything but ordinary. In 2024, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, he contested as an independent candidate from Chhamb and won decisively, defeating both BJP and Congress candidates.

Despite his victory, he remained humble, pledging his support to Omar Abdullah’s National Conference, leading to his appointment as a cabinet minister.

But unlike many ministers who become distant after assuming office, Satish Sharma has only grown closer to the people.

His doors remain open to students, athletes, youth, and the common man. He listens, understands their concerns, and most importantly—takes action.

Championing Sports and Youth Development:

One of the areas where Satish Sharma’s leadership shines the brightest is in sports and youth empowerment.

At the closing ceremony of the 68th National School Games at the University of Jammu, attended by over 4,000 athletes and officials he made a strong statement that Sports should be free from politics. Genuine talent must be encouraged, and those trying to manipulate the system will be shown the door.

His words weren’t just rhetoric—they were backed by real action.

He has taken a zero-tolerance approach to corruption in sports, ensuring that only deserving athletes get opportunities.

This was further evident when he personally inaugurated the 3rd JK UT South Kashmir Volleyball Championship in Bijbehara.

Instead of making empty promises, he engaged directly with young athletes, assuring them that the government is dedicated to nurturing grassroots talent.

A Rare Leader Who Puts Service Above Status:

Many politicians lose their humility after assuming power. They become untouchable, unapproachable, and disconnected from reality. But Satish Sharma is different.

He doesn’t carry an air of superiority. He doesn’t flaunt his position. He doesn’t see himself above the people—he sees himself as one of them.

For someone like me who has spent life mentoring young athletes and promoting sports education, meeting a minister who genuinely cares about youth development was nothing short of a breath of fresh air.

Jammu and Kashmir has seen many leaders, but few have been as humble, compassionate, and action-driven as Satish Sharma.

He is a leader who listens, understands, and works tirelessly to make a difference.

In an era where power often corrupts, Satish Sharma is a shining example of how leadership should be.

His humility is not a weakness—it is his greatest strength. It is what makes him not just a minister, but a true servant of the people.

My meeting with Minister Sharma was more than just an interaction—it was a defining moment that reminded us all that real leaders do not rule but they serve.
