Baramulla, Feb 17: The 5th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG), earlier scheduled to take place in Gulmarg from February 22 to 25, has been postponed due to insufficient snowfall, officials confirmed on Monday.
An official from the organising committee said a fresh assessment will be conducted once snow conditions improve, following which a revised schedule will be announced.
"In consultation with the technical committee, we have decided to delay the event as key ski slopes, including Affarwat and Bowl, lack the required snow coverage," the official said.
President of the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir (WGAJK) Rauf Tramboo said adequate snowfall was a basic prerequisite to hold the competition.
"The essential snowfall required for the games is missing, making it impossible to proceed. Unless Gulmarg receives fresh snow, hosting the event will not be feasible," he said.
Tramboo further said that a detailed review meeting was held, and the next course of action will be determined after February 19, as the Meteorological Department has predicted wet weather, with fresh snowfall likely in Gulmarg.
Earlier, government officials had assured that all logistical arrangements—including hotel bookings, event management, and infrastructure readiness—were in place.
The event was expected to host approximately 700 participants, including 650 technical staff, delegates, and local athletes.
