With minister Javid Rana in attendance, CCIK pushes for tourism revival at executive committee meet

Srinagar, Dec 5: The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kashmir (CCIK) Friday convened an Executive Committee meeting, which was attended by Javid Rana, Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs; Advisor to Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani and Joint Director Tourism Kashmir, Waseem Raja.

CCIK President, Tariq Rashid Ghani, welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted concerns over the slowdown in the tourism sector.

He called for renewed promotion of Kashmir as a premier travel destination and proposed targeted marketing campaigns in South Indian states to tap into a strong potential tourist base.

Raising the issue of the Rs 500 entry fee at Aru Valley, the Chamber said the charge could discourage tourists and impact local livelihoods.

Ghani also drew attention to the challenges faced by tourism taxi operators servicing bank loans, requesting that the government consider interest waivers or relief support.

To revive tourist flow, CCIK suggested that winter festivals and themed events be hosted at Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam to create buzz, enhance visibility and attract footfall during the winter season.

Speaking at the meeting, President CCIK Tariq Rashid Ghani said tourism is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, and it needs timely support and promotion.

"We urge the government to reconsider the Aru Valley entry fee and provide relief to taxi operators. With focused promotion and events at major destinations, we can revive tourist confidence and send a positive message across the country," he said.

The meeting was also attended by President SKAL Kashmir, Abdul Wahid; Chairman TTIG, Akram Siah; and other Executive Committee members.

Minister Javid Rana assured the Chamber that the issues raised will be examined and necessary initiatives taken.

Ghani expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and noted that CCIK has recently held multiple engagements with the administration, including meetings with the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, to push forward tourism and trade-related concerns.
