Srinagar, Sept 04: In a significant development, the University of Kashmir (KU) has improved its jumped by 11 notches in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, as announced by the Union Education Ministry on Thursday.
The university, which was ranked 45th in NIRF 2024, has jumped to 34th among overall category of Universities assessed across the country, indicating a noticeable jump.
The varsity figures among the top 50 universities for the 3rd consecutive year. The varsity was ranked 33rd best University in overall category of universities in 2023.
Also, the varsity has improved its rank in overall category of institutions and secured 59th rank as compared to 69th rank of last year
The overall category includes universities, colleges, engineering and technology institutions, management schools, research institutions, and pharmacy colleges.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan expressed her happiness over the improvement in the NIRF ranking.
"This improvement in the NIRF ranking is outcome of the team work. I congratulate everyone," she said.
The University has been also secured 8th position in the State Public University category.
"This remarkable achievement reflects the University’s steady upward journey in academic excellence, research output, and innovation," VC said.
Prof. Khan extended gratitude to the Chancellor J&K Universities Manoj Sinha, Pro-Chancellor Omar Abdullah, Minister for Higher Education J&K Sakina Itoo and Additional Chief Secretary Higher Education (HED) J&K Shantmanu for their support.
"I congratulate all the faculty, scholars, students, and staff whose dedication, hard work, and commitment have made this milestone possible," she said.
She said the University has consistently maintained top positions in national rankings.
"Together, the university will continue to scale new heights and uphold its legacy of excellence," she said.
Earlier this year, KU was awarded the prestigious A++ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in its latest re-accreditation cycle.
This year’s success is powered by stronger performance in Research and Professional Practices (RP), where its score rose to 34.74 from 31.25 in 2024.
Within RP, the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR – patents) sub-parameter registered remarkable growth, climbing to 1.25 in 2025 compared to 0.50 in 2024, highlighting the University’s growing emphasis on innovation, patent filings, and technology-driven research.
The Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) parameter also recorded progress, with KU scoring 74.05 points, up from 71.14 last year. These gains collectively show KU’s strengthened focus on high-quality research, innovation, and digital learning initiatives.
Prof. Khan also lauded Director DIQA KU, Prof. Manzoor Shah and his entire team for the efforts and professional coordination of the entire ranking exercise.
Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, said that KU’s upward trajectory reflects a robust academic ecosystem driven by committed faculty, active student engagement, and the integration of research and digital resources across programmes.
Dean Research KU, Prof. Mohammad Sultan Bhat, noted that KU’s growing national visibility stems from steady gains in publications, patents and technology-led research, positioning the University to expand its impact on society and industry.
Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, said that the improved ranking is the outcome of institutional synergy, with faculty, students, researchers and the administration working in tandem towards clearly defined goals.
J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha who is also the Chancellor of J&K universities termed the improvement in the NIRF ranking of KU commendable and said the achievement is a testament to transformative efforts to create world-class teaching and research institutions.
