Abrogation of Article 370, not its existence led to alienation: MLA Javed Baig

Srinagar, Feb 8: Ruling party Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Baramulla constituency Javid Baig on Saturday defended Article 370 in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly saying that abrogation of the Article led to unrest and militancy in the J&K UT. He said that Article 370 was a bridge between J&K and the Government of India. He however engaged in a heated exchange with Leader of Opposition (LoP) Sunil Sharma who said that Special status did not exist in the constitution. “If anyone can show me the words special status in the Constitution of India, I am ready to face any punishment,” Sharma said amid noisy scenes in Assembly. MLA Baramulla Javed Hassan Baig however argued that Article 370 and Article 35A were constitutional guarantees that protected Jammu and Kashmir’s internal autonomy and dignity. “It was the erosion of these assurances that weakened trust and triggered alienation. That erosion, not Article 370, created the circumstances that later fuelled unrest and militancy,” he said. He asked the Opposition, including the Leader of the Opposition not to attribute decades of violence and suffering solely to the region’s constitutional position. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir paid the price for broken promises made through Acts of Parliament and the Constitution of India,” he said. During his speech, Baig also condemned rising polarisation and hatred, warning that communal narratives were deepening social divisions across the country. "It is a dangerous trend. Politics rooted in hate can yield nothing but alienation for Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh alike," he said. Baig said that confrontations can only give bitterness, deprivation and a politics that divides instead of offering unity. “If someone says they hate me, the reason is obvious—I am Kashmiri and I am Muslim. Beyond that, there is no difference; we are all Indians,” he said. Referring to Budget, Baig countered the Opposition’s claims that Jammu and Kashmir was being “propped up” entirely by central funding. "Central grants were not unique to J&K but part of a national fiscal framework applicable to all states and Union Territories. The Centre’s share of tax devolution is 39 per cent across the country. Central Sponsored Schemes account for around 12 per cent, while J&K’s own tax collection stands at about 18 per cent and borrowing at 15 per cent,” he said. Baig said that J&K witnesses higher central spending because of its strategic location bordering China and Pakistan. “No one says the Centre is doing a favour when it invests in border infrastructure elsewhere. Why should J&K be taunted for the same?” he said. About the fragile economy of J&K, MLA Baramulla said the J&Ks dependence on tourism and horticulture made it highly vulnerable to political instability. "There is a need for sustained investment in education and human resource development. Discrimination against Kashmiri students and workers outside the UT would undermine economic integration. How can our youth prosper when they are viewed with suspicion and contempt in their own country," he said. Baig while referring to the remarks of Opposition MLAs on treasury benches, he said that politics of hatred will only push us towards further ruin. "Yesterday opposition MLAs said that ruling party MLAs are good for nothing but i must tell them that Ignorance is not the most dangerous thing but arrogance is," he said.

Srinagar, Feb 7: General Secretary Organization, Jammu & Kashmir BJP Ashok Koul Saturday addressed a massive public convention at Municipal Park, Ashajpora Bypass, Anantnag. The convention was also addressed by J&K BJP General Secretary Anwar Khan, District President Anantnag Rakesh Koul, Programme Incharge Abaid Hussain Nengroo, senior BJP leader Sofi Yousuf, and a large number of party workers and supporters. In his address, Ashok Koul launched a scathing attack on the National Conference government, stating that while the Modi-led Central Government continues to stand firmly with the people of Jammu & Kashmir, the NC regime has failed to deliver on its promises. “The Modi Government has provided â‚č1430 crore as disaster relief assistance for Jammu & Kashmir to support distressed families affected by natural calamities. This reflects the sensitivity and commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards the people of this region,” Koul said. Ashok Koul further said that the recently presented Union Budget is a strong, public-friendly, and Viksit Bharat–oriented budget, aimed at empowering youth, farmers, women, and the poor, while strengthening infrastructure and economic growth. "In sharp contrast, the budget presented by the NC government in J&K is completely hollow, directionless, and devoid of any concrete roadmap for development or employment," he said. Later, at the BJP District Office Anantnag, Ashok Koul, along with Anwar Khan, Sofi Yousuf, and Rakesh Koul, addressed an organizational meeting of all district office bearers and constituency presidents, reviewing ongoing party programmes and future strategies. He said that the BJP’s strength lies in its cadre-based organization. He said that every BJP activist must work tirelessly at the grassroots level to address public issues and strengthen people’s trust in the party. Speaking on the occasion, Anwar Khan said that BJP workers are the real ambassadors of the party’s ideology and governance model. Our focus is to ensure that the benefits of Central Government schemes reach every eligible person without discrimination, he said. Rakesh Koul assured that the Anantnag district unit is fully committed to strengthening the party at the booth level and serving the people with dedication and honesty.

Sajad Lone flags omission of Kashmiris’ safety in LG’s address

Srinagar, Feb 2: J&K Peoples Conference President and MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone on Monday submitted crucial amendments to the Lieutenant Governor's address concerning the safety of Kashmiris, regularisation of daily wagers and enhanced opportunities for civil service aspirants. According to business circulated by the Assembly Secretariat, Lone has proposed an amendment regretting the omission of condemnation regarding attacks on Kashmiri students, traders and hawkers in different states and Union Territories. In a significant proposal for civil service aspirants, Lone has moved to enhance the age limit for open merit candidates appearing in the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) examination from 32 to 37 years.  The amendment addresses concerns of youth who have faced disruptions and limited opportunities in recent years. The three amendments moved by MLA Handwara highlight key concerns affecting Kashmiris both within and outside the Union Territory that range from safety and dignity issues faced by the community in various states to employment security and expanded access to administrative services.

First Day of Budget Session: Er Rashid Brings Kashmiri Identity to Parliament, Attends House in Pheran

New Delhi, Jan 28: The first day of the Budget Session of Parliament witnessed a powerful and symbolic moment as Baramulla MP Er Rashid attended the House wearing the traditional pheran, carrying Kashmiri cultural identity into the nation’s highest democratic forum. The gesture stood out for its quiet resolve. Even amid confinement and constraints, the pheran reflected roots, dignity and an unbroken connection with Kashmir. Reacting to this, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said, “A Kashmiri cultural identity preserved and carried into the House. MP Er Rashid attending Parliament in a pheran is not merely about attire, it is about dignity and self-respect. Even in confinement, his roots stand visible.” Inam added, “At a time when people were not allowed to enter the Civil Secretariat in pheran, it was Er Rashid who broke that barrier and asserted the right to wear our traditional attire. He also attended Assembly sessions in a pheran during his tenure as an MLA, making it clear that identity cannot be dictated or diluted.” Inam Un Nabi said Parliament must reflect the cultural diversity of India, and such expressions reaffirm that Kashmir’s voice, heritage and dignity continue to find space inside the Parliament of India.

Altaf Bukhari flags ‘serious irregularities’ in judicial services exam, seeks probe

Srinagar, Jan 22: Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) president Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the outcome of the Civil Services (Judicial) Mains Examination. In a post on X, Altaf Bukhari alleged regional imbalance, lack of transparency and possible communal considerations in the selection process. Bukhari said that only 13 candidates from the Kashmir Valley were shortlisted for the viva voce stage out of a total of 124 candidates, while the remaining 111 candidates belong to the Jammu division. He described the figures as “deeply disturbing” and said they raise legitimate questions about the fairness of the evaluation process. He said that candidates from the Valley who failed to qualify have alleged serious irregularities and lack of transparency in the declaration of results. “Given the stark regional imbalance reflected in the shortlist, these concerns cannot be brushed aside and must be subjected to a fair and impartial investigation,” Altaf Bukhari said. Referring to the political climate in Jammu and Kashmir, the JKAP chief said that the situation is particularly worrying at a time when mistrust prevails between the two regions. He recalled that during the 2024 Assembly elections, political discourse was polarised along religious lines, with the BJP allegedly communalising politics in Jammu and the National Conference responding in a similar manner in the Valley. “While both parties may have gained electorally from this polarisation, the real cost was paid by the secular fabric and social harmony of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. Bukhari alleged that such tendencies have continued beyond electoral politics and are now affecting institutions and merit-based processes. He cited the recent controversy surrounding the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), Katra, where, he claimed, the merit-based selection of MBBS students was communalised. He alleged that the revocation of permission for the MBBS course at SMVDIME, allegedly under political pressure, had harmed the larger public interest of Jammu and Kashmir and further deepened communal fault lines. Drawing a parallel, Bukhari said the outcome of the Civil Services (Judicial) Mains Examination also appears to be clouded by similar considerations, as reflected in the “disproportionate and highly skewed” shortlist. "At a time when mistrust prevails in both regions, the only responsible course is to keep the results in abeyance and initiate a transparent, independent inquiry," he said. Altaf Bukhari urged the J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ensure that the results of the Civil Services (Judicial) Mains Examination remain on hold "until a fair and thorough inquiry is conducted."

Mehbooba Mufti chose inaction in power, now raising Pir Panjal-Chenab slogans: Inam Un Nabi

Srinagar, Jan 21: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) on Wednesday launched an attack on PDP President Mehbooba Mufti over her recent demand for separate administrative arrangements for Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley. Inam Un Nabi said Mehbooba Mufti remained silent when she had the power to act. In a statement issued here, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said Mehbooba Mufti chose inaction in power and now she is raising slogans for Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley. "Had she been sincere in demanding Divisional Commissioners for Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley, why didn’t she do it when she was the Chief Minister in the PDP-BJP government? She had power, authority and an alliance partner at the Centre, yet she chose silence and inaction," he said. He highlighted Er Rashid’s consistent stand and it was MP Baramulla Er Rashid who was pleading for two Hill Development Councils for Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal, as these areas require focused governance due to their difficult terrain, remoteness and decades of neglect. He added that Er Rashid not only raised the issue on public platforms but also pursued it institutionally. “Er Rashid brought a resolution in the J&K Assembly as well when he was an MLA, demanding two Hill Development Councils for Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley,” he said. Inam Un Nabi said the discourse around Jammu often ignores the realities of these regions. “Those who talk about separate statehood Jammu should understand that Jammu includes Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley, not just two and a half Jammu districts. Unfortunately, these regions have remained ignored on every front,” he said. Inam Un Nabi further alleged that leadership centred around Jammu district has historically sidelined these Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley areas. “Jammu district politicians have used Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley for political mileage, but failed to ensure fair development, genuine representation and equal opportunities for the people,” he added. AIP reiterated its demand for concrete and time-bound measures to address regional imbalance and ensure that Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley receive their rightful share in governance, resources and decision-making.

Vivek Bali slams Mehbooba Mufti over 1953 remarks, rejects politics of regional division

Jammu, Jan 21: Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) State President Vivek Bali on Wednesday criticized PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti over her remarks on 1953 incident. Bali was referring to the statement of Mehbooba Mufti wherein she said “Those Who Divided Regions Questioning Us" while drawing parallels with 1953 and referred to the arrest of Sheikh Abdullah following his alleged support for the Dixon Plan. In an statement issued here, Vivek Bali along with his political advisor Dilawar Singh questioned Mehbooba Mufti’s intentions and political narrative, stating that such remarks were misleading and aimed at reviving old controversies for political gain. He asked why, during the tenure of the PDP-led government in Jammu and Kashmir, no concrete steps were taken to create separate districts in the Pir Panjal region or to appoint a dedicated Divisional Commissioner for the area. Bali said these demands were ignored when the PDP was in power, raising serious doubts about the sincerity of the party’s current claims. "We want a Jammu and Kashmir free from unnecessary interference. We believe in the unity of the region as it existed during the Maharaja’s time, and we do not support attempts to disturb that unity for narrow political interests,” Bali said. He accused Mehbooba Mufti of indulging in vote bank politics by repeatedly raising sensitive historical and regional issues instead of focusing on present-day development and public welfare. He added that the people of J&K do not support this kind of divisive politics and have repeatedly expressed their desire for unity, peace, and progress. “We do not want division. Any attempt to fragment Jammu and Kashmir on regional or political lines is against the wishes of the common people,” Bali said. Vivek Bali also made it clear that the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party strongly opposes any forces or narratives that seek to divide Jammu and Kashmir into separate states or regions. He said SBSP stands firmly for the unity, integrity, and harmonious development of Jammu and Kashmir, and will continue to raise its voice against politics that promote division, confusion, and instability for personal or electoral gains.

NC must clear stand on divisional status for Pir Panjal, Chenab Valley: Mehbooba Mufti

Jammu, Jan 20: Former chief minister and president People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti on Monday asked the National Conference to come out with a clear and unambiguous stand on the long-pending demand for divisional status for the Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley regions, saying the issue was rooted in administrative necessity and not political rhetoric. Addressing a press conference here, Mufti said the demand was “absolutely genuine” given the difficult terrain, fragile environment, far-flung habitations, and lack of adequate access to basic services in both regions. “Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley face serious administrative neglect. Their topography, vulnerability to environmental hazards, and distance from decision-making centres make divisional status the need of the hour,” she said. Mehbooba Mufti said that governance must reach people at their doorstep, especially in border and mountainous areas. Mufti accused both the National Conference and the BJP of being on the “same page” when it comes to criticising the PDP for raising the issue. "It is ironic that parties responsible for dividing regions for political convenience are questioning us for speaking up for the marginalised,” she said. Drawing a historical parallel and on making allegations against Mehbooba Mufti of supporting Dixons Plan she reminded NC president Farooq Abdullah, the PDP chief said that Sheikh Abdullah’s covert support for the Dixon Plan had led to his arrest in 1953. “Today, raising legitimate demands for Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley is once again being portrayed as divisive,” she said. She alleged that the BJP had weakened the political and administrative interests of the Pir Panjal region, and by extension Chenab Valley, under the guise of delimitation. “These decisions were taken to serve narrow electoral interests, not the welfare of the people,” Mufti said. Emphasising Jammu and Kashmir’s status as a border region, she said areas like Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley face compounded challenges. “Environmental risks, strategic vulnerabilities, and lack of infrastructure demand focused administrative attention,” she added. Mufti said governments must prioritise rights and dignity after securing votes. “Instead of addressing genuine grievances, the PDP is being targeted simply for raising the voice of those who have remained unheard for decades,” she said. She asserted that seeking divisional status for Pir Panjal and Chenab Valley was about fairness and governance. “This is not about politics. It is about administrative justice and equal opportunity,” Mufti said, adding that the PDP would continue to stand with the people of both regions.

Time to release Er Rasheed: AIP welcomes Ex-CJI’s remarks that 'Bail is a Right'

Srinagar, Jan 19: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP)has welcomed former Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud’s statement that Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam accused of instigating Delhi riots and languishing in jail since five years should have been released on bail. In a statement, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi said, “Ex-chief justice of India’s statement is a ray of hope for hundreds of Kashmiris languishing in jails since years together who have been booked under UAPA and their trials are undergoing at very nominal pace." He said that former CJI’s statement must act as a catalyst to wake up the conscience of judiciary and other institutions and all Kashmiri political prisoners should be released. “There is no justification to keep Engineer Rasheed two-time MLA and now an elected MP still in jail, who is about to complete seven years in Tihar," he said. He said that engineer Rasheed has been victimized only for his political belief and the fact is, current government has failed to silence him for speaking for the rights of people of Jammu and Kashmir. His continuous detention is murder of justice and democracy “It is constitutional and moral duty of the judiciary to free Engineer Rasheed from the Tihar jail, especially when former chief justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud has confessed that even few years  in detention violates the rights of a person like Shahjehan Muhammad Umar Khalid," he said.

'Normalisation of injustice must stop': Mehbooba Mufti on termination of Govt employees

Srinagar, Jan 13: The former chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said the "arbitrary terminations" in J&K have been dangerously normalised. "This isn’t just about the employee. Behind every termination is a family pushed into darkness a form of collective punishment with entire households condemned overnight by draconian Government of India (GOI) policies that mock the rule of law & discard due process," she said. "This normalisation of injustice must stop," her post on X reads. Her statement was in reaction to the termination of five government employees by the J&K Lieutenant Governor (LG). Earlier on Tuesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha ordered the dismissal of five government employees for their alleged links with proscribed militant organisations. Officials said the action was taken after investigations and intelligence inputs established their active association with terrorist outfits, misuse of official positions and continued involvement in terror-related activities, posing a serious threat to national security. Among those dismissed included Mohammad Yousf Kumar, a driver with the Health and Medical Education Department and a resident of Ganderbal, Farooq Ahmad Bhat, a Class-IV worker of the Forest Department from Anantnag, Tariq Ahmad Rah, a laboratory technician posted at SDH Bijbehara, Mohammad Ishfaq, a teacher from Bhaderwah in Doda district and Bashir Ahmad Mir, an Assistant Lineman in the Public Health Engineering Department from Gurez in Bandipora district.

NLU Row: AIP accuses Omar Abdullah of 'diversion tactics', double speak on key institutions

Srinagar, Jan 13: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi on Tuesday accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of deliberately diverting public attention from core issues and indulging in what he termed as “double speaking” on major developmental commitments in Jammu and Kashmir. Inam Un Nabi said Omar Abdullah should remember that it was MP Er Rashid who staged a 72-hour hunger strike in front of the Civil Secretariat demanding IIT and IIM for Kashmir, without ever opposing the rights of Jammu. “Er Rashid has always believed J&K is like two eyes, one Kashmir and the other Jammu. He demanded institutions for Kashmir while respecting Jammu’s aspirations equally,” he said. Reacting strongly to Shri Lal Sharma’s discrimination remarks, Inam Un Nabi raised the issue of delimitation, asking Shri Lal Sharma to answer what Kashmir received when Jammu was given additional representation. “If delimitation gave six seats to Jammu, what did Kashmir get in return? People deserve honest answers, not selective narratives,” Inam said. Taking strong exception to Omar Abdullah’s contradictory statements, Inam Un Nabi said the Chief Minister announced in the Assembly that a National Law University (NLU) would be established in Budgam, but later told people in Jammu that the location for the NLU is yet to be decided. “This is a clear case of double talk. Either the CM is misleading the Assembly or misleading the public. Both are unacceptable,” he asserted. Inam further said the NLU debate is being pushed as a diversion from the SMVDMIE issue, where the institution was allegedly derecognized in a manner that appears aimed at blocking admissions of a particular community students, calling it a serious and shameful matter that cannot be brushed aside through political messaging.

MLA Langate slams NC government over Estates Department plan on Sericulture land

Srinagar, Jan 11: Senior AIP leader and MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed on Sunday castigated Omar Abdullah led government regarding Estates Department’s proposal to construct residential flats on sericulture land at Rambagh, Srinagar. MLA Langate termed it a direct assault on a vital livelihood sector. "On one hand the government is investing substantial public funds for the revival and promotion of sericulture, while on the other hand the Estates Department is attempting to divert precious sericulture land along with vital infrastructure to construct luxury flats aimed at appeasing bureaucratic and political interests," MLA Langate said. He said such decisions undermine both policy intent and public trust. He said that sericulture land at Rambagh was a valuable public asset meant for productive, employment-generating purposes and should not be converted into concrete structures. “This land belongs to the people and to a sector that sustains livelihoods. Using it for luxury flats is unacceptable,” he said. He launched a scathing attack on the government and said the Estates Department was acting with political patronage to please politicians and bureaucrats. He said the department has completely failed to evolve a transparent and fair mechanism for allotment of government accommodation and instead resorts to land grabs under the garb of official housing. He warned that AIP will not allow any move that compromises sericulture infrastructure and public land. He urged the government to immediately scrap the proposal and stop sacrificing livelihoods and public assets for elite comfort, asserting that such governance reflects insensitivity and misplaced priorities.

BJP slams NC government over delaying appointment of Chairman JKBOSE

Srinagar, Jan 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday criticised the Omar Abdullah-led government for its failure to appoint a chairman for JK Board of School Education (JKBOSE) in the last one year. BJP termed it as an administrative failure due to which JKBOSE was functioning without a permanent Chairman since January 2025. In a statement issued here, BJP said that despite the passage of nearly one year, the government has failed to appoint a regular Chairman for JKBOSE, raising serious concerns about governance and the future of students. The party questioned the Omar government over the prolonged delay, asking why no permanent appointment has been made in an entire year and who would be held accountable if students’ careers are adversely affected due to administrative uncertainty. BJP further alleged that the delay was deliberate, claiming that instead of appointing a competent and deserving candidate, the government was allegedly attempting to accommodate its close associates. “This is not merely a delay but a clear reflection of the Omar government’s flawed priorities and political interference in crucial educational institutions,” the party said. The party statement said that such practices were detrimental to the academic interests of lakhs of students. The BJP demanded immediate appointment of a permanent JKBOSE Chairman on merit, warning that continued inaction would further expose what it termed as the government’s “misgovernance and political favoritism."

Venezuela to buy only US-made goods under oil deal: Trump

Washington, Jan 8: President Donald Trump has said that Venezuela has agreed to purchase only American-made products using proceeds from a new US-brokered oil deal, describing the arrangement as a major shift in the Caracas economic orientation and a boost for American manufacturers, farmers, and exporters. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had been informed that Venezuela would use the revenue it receives from the oil agreement to buy US goods across a wide range of sectors. “I have just been informed that Venezuela is going to be purchasing only American Made Products, with the money they receive from our new Oil Deal,” Trump wrote. He said the purchases will include “American Agricultural Products, and American Made Medicines, Medical Devices, and Equipment,” as well as technology and hardware to improve Venezuela’s electricity grid and energy facilities. Trump described it as a strategic realignment, saying Venezuela is committing to doing business with the United States as its principal partner after years of economic ties with US rivals. “In other words, Venezuela is committing to doing business with the United States of America as their principal partner,” Trump said. “A wise choice, and a very good thing for the people of Venezuela, and the United States.” The announcement follows the Trump administration’s decision to take control of Venezuelan oil sales under a new framework that places exports and revenues under US oversight. Administration officials have said the oil will be sold at market prices, with proceeds directed through US-controlled mechanisms. Trump presented the purchasing commitment as a direct benefit to the US economy, particularly American farmers, manufacturers and medical suppliers. Venezuela’s electric grid has suffered repeated failures in recent years, while shortages of medicines and medical equipment have been widely documented. Trump said US-made equipment would be used to “improve Venezuela’s Electric Grid and Energy Facilities.” Under Mudoro’s regime, Venezuela relied heavily on imports from China, Russia and Iran, often using discounted oil shipments as payment. The new arrangement reverses that trend. By tying oil revenue to US purchases, the Trump Administration has linked Venezuela’s access to global energy markets with demand for American goods. (IANS)

Says, government making efforts despite limited powersRehan Qayoom MirSrinagar, Dec 5: National Conference (NC) President Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Friday said that while the party is working to strengthen its organization at all levels, some voices from within are unfortunately speaking against it. BJP helped PDP win Budgam bypoll, alleges JK Dy CM Surinder Choudhary

KS News DeskSrinagar, Nov 26 (PTI): Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Wednesday alleged that the BJP "helped the People's Democratic Party secure a win" in the recently held Budgam bypoll."Do you think the BJP had no role to play in PDP's success? Did the BJP not field the proxy candidates? It was all manipulated," he told reporters here. The ruling National Conference (NC) lost the bypoll to the PDP by over 4,000 votes. The poll was necessitated after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah vacated the seat following his election from the family bastion of Ganderbal as well in last year's assembly polls. The result of the bypoll was declared on November 14.Choudhary added, "But we are proud that the people stood by the NC candidate. The whole (BJP-led central) government was working to ensure PDP's win."The deputy chief minister said Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti had met Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha before the election, and "we got to see in Budgam that she must have discussed with the LG the ways to defeat the NC"."Let them celebrate for a few days. Budgam has always supported the NC and will do so in the future. There were some misunderstandings, and those will be resolved," he added, apparently referring to the differences with the party's Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar, Ruhullah Mehdi. The MP has had a strained relationship with the party leadership over several issues, including reservation.Mehdi, who has represented Budgam, a Shia-dominated seat, in the assembly thrice before, didn't campaign for the party candidate in the bypoll and stayed away from the election.Choudhary further told reporters that the Omar Abdullah-led government is promise-bound to work for the welfare of the people."We will fulfill all the commitments made in our manifesto. I only appeal to the people that they do not fall for rumour-mongering. It is a conspiracy to create a gap between the people and the NC," he said.On the issue of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) admissions, the deputy CM said people should desist from communalising education."The beauty of India lies in its unity in diversity. Jammu and Kashmir has always been known for brotherhood and communal harmony. I only want to tell those people who want to communalise education, that please spare it," he said.Earlier, a delegation of BJP legislators called on Sinha and sought the revocation of the first admission list issued by the SMVDIME in the Reasi district. The delegation, led by the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Sunil Sharma, questioned the selection list, alleging that a majority of the admitted students belonged to one community. They urged the administration to ensure that students "having faith in the deity" be considered for admission.

Communalising health, education fundamentally wrong, toxic politics should stop: Tanvir Sadiq

Muhammad AdnanSrinagar, Nov 24: Chief Spokesperson Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq on Sunday said that communalising health and education was fundamentally wrong and it harms society today besides destroying nation tomorrow. In a post on X, Tanvir Sadiq said that those communalising institutions aren t just doing politics but are dividing society at its core."This toxic politics must stop before irreparable damage is done," he wrote on X.He said if hospitals, schools, universities, and medical colleges start deciding intake on the basis of religion, what kind of country will we become."Tomorrow, will a patient be treated according to their faith? Will merit be pushed aside to satisfy majoritarian demands? This is a recipe for disaster," he said.He wrote this while reacting to a statement of Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma wherein he said that selection of a large number of non-Hindu students for medical courses at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) has caused distress among many devotees. In his meeting with J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Sharma urged him that the issue involves not only academic considerations but also cultural sensitivities and faith-related expectations associated with institutions linked to Mata Vaishno Devi. The delegation led by Sunil Sharma urged the Lieutenant Governor to take immediate steps to address the concerns raised by devotees of Mata Vaishno Devi.On this NC's Tanvir Sadiq said the BJP s stance on the SMVDIME admissions where selections were purely merit-based is not just misguided, it is dangerous."A shrine-funded institution does not become a religion-based institution," Tanvir Sadiq wrote on X.He said donations made in devotion cannot be converted into tools of discrimination."For your petty political gains, BJP, please do not turn our institutions into battlegrounds of faith. You are planting a time bomb that, once it goes off, will create a divide no one will ever be able to fix," his post on X reads.

Direct your political energy where its actually needed: MP Ruhullah to CM, NC leaders

Reiterates States must be empowered through democratic rights , seeks compensation for Nowgam blast victimsJahangeer GanaieSrinagar, Nov 21: Member of Parliament (MP) Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday responded sharply to criticism from some National Conference (NC) leaders, saying they should direct their political energy where it is actually needed ."Instead of fighting against me, NC leaders should have adopted the same posture while taking on Modi, Ruhullah said while speaking to reporters after visiting Hari Parigam area of Awantipora to express solidarity with the family of the Crime Branch photographer Javid Ahmad, who lost his life in the recent Nowgam blast.MP spent time with the bereaved family, offering condolences and assuring them that he would raise the matter at every appropriate platform.Ruhullah said the Chief Minister should have kept his ego aside and fought for the mandate he received from the people. "Omar Abdullah should have set ego aside and instead of making personal attacks, he should fight for what he got votes for, he said.Calling out those within NC who have been speaking against him, the senior National Conference leader said, "Those leaders who are speaking against me just to keep their boss happy should fight against Modi with the same courage and posture. The MP demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into Nowgam blast. He questioned the circumstances under which the ammunition material was being transported, saying that the mishandling appeared to be highly unprofessional and required an independent probe."The Nowgam blast must be investigated thoroughly. Why was the ammunition material being carried in such an unprofessional manner and kept in a police station, and how were civilians like the tailor and Naib Tehsildar brought there? All angles must be looked into so that the truth comes out, he said.Ruhullah also urged the government to compensate all victims, including civilians and professionals like Javid Ahmad, who suffered due to the incident."Whoever has suffered in any way in this blast deserves compensation. The government must ensure that justice is delivered to every affected family, he added.Mehdi also rejected the claim that terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir was linked to the abrogation of Article 370. "Linking Article 370 with militancy is nothing but propaganda. Such incidents were happening before 2019, and the same are happening now, he said.Highlighting the sacrifices made in the fight against terrorism, Mehdi said the people from all communities have contributed, and the death of photographer Javid is also a fight against terrorism."In fighting terrorism, people from every sect - Muslims and non-Muslims - have sacrificed. This is not the work of one sect. People like Javid have contributed immensely, and people irrespective of religion or caste will continue to stand against terrorism, he said.Ruhullah reiterated the importance of restoring democratic rights and empowering states, stating that people in Jammu and Kashmir felt empowered when they had special status and now feel disempowered after its revocation. "There is a dire need to empower states through democratic rights. People in J&K felt empowered with the special status; after its abrogation, they feel disempowered, he said. (KNO)

Sopore scientist gains global recognition for black hole research

Suhail Khan Baramulla, Jan 6: A young aerospace engineer from Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is proving that dedication and ambition can propel one to global heights. Munaf-ul-Raquib who holds a B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering, has gained international recognition for his research on black holes and cosmology. Munaf-ul-Raquib revealed that his paper on the thermodynamics of black holes was recently published in the International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR). “About a year ago, I conducted research on the gravity of black holes and cosmology, which has now been published in IJSR,” he said. He said that since his research was published in the international journal, he has been receiving opportunities from various countries to participate in research dialogues. Raquib added that in the coming months he is scheduled to participate in international conferences in Paris on April 16 and later in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Sopore aerospace engineer noted that he is also participating in various conferences across different countries. Speaking about his research, Munaf-ul-Raquib addressed a fundamental paradox in astrophysics: how black holes can appear to violate thermodynamic laws, particularly concerning entropy.“If we observe a black hole, it seems to contradict thermodynamic principles,” he said. Using the frameworks of Anti-de Sitter space (AdS) and Conformal Field Theory (CFT), Raqeeb’s research proposes a theoretical model that reconciles black hole mechanics with thermodynamics. “In this paper, I have explained how a black hole can function without violating thermodynamic laws,” he said. He described the achievement as both personal and symbolic. “It is a proud moment for me to represent my state, especially Sopore, on an international platform,” he said. Raqeeb shared that Astrophysics was his childhood dream, and his grandfather encouraged me immensely. "After my grandfather passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic, my parents continued to champion my aspirations. My parents left no stone unturned in helping me pursue my dreams,” he said. He said that his academic path included taking the JEE and later the AME CET entrance exams, through which he secured a seat in aerospace engineering at the Nasik Research Centre. “My parents not only supported me morally but also created an environment where I could pursue my dreams freely,” he said. He emphasized the role of family in nurturing talent. “Just as my parents supported me, it is the responsibility of all parents to help their children follow their dreams.” “Young people should avoid wrong practices. They must dream of a beautiful tomorrow but work hard today to make their parents proud,” he further added.

Class 10th results soon after appointment of new Chairman: JKBOSE

'Results likely to get delayed in absence of Chairman' Jammu, Jan 7: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) on Wednesday said the result of the class 10th examinations will be declared soon after the appointment of the Chairman of the Board. The statement comes amid the uncertainty about the declaration of the results by JKBOSE. In an official handout issued here, JKBOSE has advised students not to pay heed to fake links and websites announcing declaration of class 10 results. "Result of class 10th will be declared within few days soon after the appointment of new Chairman," the statement reads. The JKBOSE has stated that the results of annual examination of class 10 of Kashmir valley and winter zone areas of Jammu Division are almost ready. "But its approval by Result Declaration Committee headed by BOSE Chairman is a pre- requisite before its declaration. In absence of the Chairman the results are likely to get a little delayed," it reads. The JKBOSE officials have advised the students to wait for the formal declaration on the official website of the Board- www.jkbose.nic.in. "Students should not get misled by scamesters and fake narratives circulated by some mischievous elements, whose sole aim is to create confusion in the innocent student community," the statement reads.

College contractual faculty seek pay hike, regularisation

Srinagar, Jan 8: Contractual faculty members working in government degree colleges of Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department (HED) have expressed strong resentment over what they term as a glaring disparity in salaries, demanding revision of their pay in line with University Grants Commission (UGC) norms and regularisation of their services. The faculty, many of whom hold PhDs and are qualified through NET, SET and JRF, said they have been denied UGC-recommended pay scales despite discharging academic responsibilities equivalent to their regular counterparts. “Hundreds of highly qualified scholars have been pushed into silent suffering. For years, we have been assured that our pay revision is under consideration, but nothing has materialised so far,” said Dr Ishfaq Gowhar, a contractual faculty member. Earlier, Director Colleges J&K had acknowledged the legitimacy of the faculty’s demand, stating that while the issue was genuine, its implementation involved significant financial implications due to the large number of contractual appointments. “We are aware that they deserve salary enhancement, but the number of contractual faculty is huge and it has financial implications,” he earlier said. Dr Gowhar pointed out that contractual lecturers, who form the backbone of the higher education system, continue to work on a fixed monthly honorarium of Rs 28,000, which has remained unchanged for nearly a decade. “The irony is that a Class IV employee with a Class 10 qualification draws a salary exceeding Rs 50,000, while doctorate-holding teachers engaged in teaching, mentoring and academic research are paid a fraction of that,” he said. He added that institutions such as SKUAST-K, University of Kashmir and Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) have implemented revised UGC pay scales, but the Higher Education Department has failed to extend similar treatment to its contractual faculty. Dr Gowhar said the demand for “equal work, equal pay” gets prominently featured in election campaigns, raising hopes among contractual teachers. “Promises were made and slogans echoed during elections, but once the process ended, our voices were reduced to silence. Even meeting officials now feels impossible,” he said. He said contractual faculty were not seeking privileges but dignity, fairness and recognition for their service. The faculty appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the Education Minister to intervene and take concrete steps towards addressing their long-pending demands. “This issue is not merely about salaries. It is about survival, justice and dignity in the classrooms of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

AIP condemns Mehbooba Mufti’s remarks, rejects profiling of religious places

Srinagar, Jan 17: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi on Saturday strongly condemned PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti’s statement suggesting that if religious places are to be “profiled”, the process should start with temples and Hindu priests, instead of mosques and Imams. Inam Un Nabi said AIP was categorically against profiling of any religious place, irrespective of faith or community and such statements only deepen mistrust and polarisation in society. “Let it be Masjids and Imaams or temples and priests, profiling of religious institutions is unacceptable. AIP rejects it completely. Had the issue involved only temples or priests, AIP would have shown the same resentment and protest as we do for Masjids and Imaams,” he said. The AIP spokesperson said faith is a matter of personal conscience and religious belief and it should not be dragged into a culture of surveillance or administrative interference. “We do not want policing of faith. The role of the administration is to ensure peace and law and order, not to monitor religious identity or religious spaces,” Inam Un Nabi added. He appealed to all political parties to act responsibly and avoid statements that pit one community against another, stressing that Kashmir has a long history of communal harmony which must be protected. “AIP stands for dignity, equality and justice for all. We will oppose any attempt that targets places of worship, whichever religion it belongs to,” he said.
