Sopore scientist gains global recognition for black hole research

Suhail Khan Baramulla, Jan 6: A young aerospace engineer from Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is proving that dedication and ambition can propel one to global heights. Munaf-ul-Raquib who holds a B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering, has gained international recognition for his research on black holes and cosmology. Munaf-ul-Raquib revealed that his paper on the thermodynamics of black holes was recently published in the International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR). “About a year ago, I conducted research on the gravity of black holes and cosmology, which has now been published in IJSR,” he said. He said that since his research was published in the international journal, he has been receiving opportunities from various countries to participate in research dialogues. Raquib added that in the coming months he is scheduled to participate in international conferences in Paris on April 16 and later in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Sopore aerospace engineer noted that he is also participating in various conferences across different countries. Speaking about his research, Munaf-ul-Raquib addressed a fundamental paradox in astrophysics: how black holes can appear to violate thermodynamic laws, particularly concerning entropy.“If we observe a black hole, it seems to contradict thermodynamic principles,” he said. Using the frameworks of Anti-de Sitter space (AdS) and Conformal Field Theory (CFT), Raqeeb’s research proposes a theoretical model that reconciles black hole mechanics with thermodynamics. “In this paper, I have explained how a black hole can function without violating thermodynamic laws,” he said. He described the achievement as both personal and symbolic. “It is a proud moment for me to represent my state, especially Sopore, on an international platform,” he said. Raqeeb shared that Astrophysics was his childhood dream, and his grandfather encouraged me immensely. "After my grandfather passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic, my parents continued to champion my aspirations. My parents left no stone unturned in helping me pursue my dreams,” he said. He said that his academic path included taking the JEE and later the AME CET entrance exams, through which he secured a seat in aerospace engineering at the Nasik Research Centre. “My parents not only supported me morally but also created an environment where I could pursue my dreams freely,” he said. He emphasized the role of family in nurturing talent. “Just as my parents supported me, it is the responsibility of all parents to help their children follow their dreams.” “Young people should avoid wrong practices. They must dream of a beautiful tomorrow but work hard today to make their parents proud,” he further added.

AIP condemns Mehbooba Mufti’s remarks, rejects profiling of religious places

Srinagar, Jan 17: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi on Saturday strongly condemned PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti’s statement suggesting that if religious places are to be “profiled”, the process should start with temples and Hindu priests, instead of mosques and Imams. Inam Un Nabi said AIP was categorically against profiling of any religious place, irrespective of faith or community and such statements only deepen mistrust and polarisation in society. “Let it be Masjids and Imaams or temples and priests, profiling of religious institutions is unacceptable. AIP rejects it completely. Had the issue involved only temples or priests, AIP would have shown the same resentment and protest as we do for Masjids and Imaams,” he said. The AIP spokesperson said faith is a matter of personal conscience and religious belief and it should not be dragged into a culture of surveillance or administrative interference. “We do not want policing of faith. The role of the administration is to ensure peace and law and order, not to monitor religious identity or religious spaces,” Inam Un Nabi added. He appealed to all political parties to act responsibly and avoid statements that pit one community against another, stressing that Kashmir has a long history of communal harmony which must be protected. “AIP stands for dignity, equality and justice for all. We will oppose any attempt that targets places of worship, whichever religion it belongs to,” he said.

KCCI, tourism stakeholders meet LG, seek urgent measures for revival of Kashmir tourism

Srinagar, Jan 20: A high-level delegation of the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I), led by its President Javid Ahmad Tenga, along with senior representatives of leading tourism trade associations, met  Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha. The delegation held an extensive discussion on the revival of the tourism sector, which continues to face challenges following recent adverse developments. During the interaction, the KCC&I-led delegation submitted a comprehensive memorandum outlining urgent policy and administrative measures required to restore confidence, stabilise operations, and ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism in the Union Territory. The delegation acknowledged that under the able and visionary leadership of the Lieutenant Governor, Kashmir tourism had earlier reached unprecedented heights, witnessing record tourist arrivals and investments running into several thousand crores of rupees across hotels and allied hospitality infrastructure. Briefing the Lieutenant Governor, KCC&I President Javid Ahmad Tenga highlighted that the tourism sector has been severely impacted after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, resulting in mass cancellations, a sharp decline in tourist inflows, and serious financial stress for hoteliers, transporters, tour operators, guides, houseboat owners, and thousands of daily-wage earners. He underlined that the sector was currently grappling with both demand-side challenges and long-pending regulatory bottlenecks. Tourism promotion emerged as the main thrust of the discussions, with the Chamber strongly advocating the launch of an aggressive Pan-India and international tourism promotion campaign to restore confidence and safeguard upcoming tourism seasons. The delegation also urged promotion of Kashmir through the ‘Incredible India’ initiative of the Government of India and sought Leave Travel Concession (LTC) priority for Jammu & Kashmir, terming it a powerful confidence-building and demand-generation measure for domestic tourism. Another major issue discussed in detail was the renewal of registration of hotels, houseboats, and guest houses. The delegation apprised the Lieutenant Governor that delays and procedural complexities in renewals are causing severe operational difficulties for hospitality units. He sought immediate implementation of a single-window, time-bound, and digitized renewal mechanism, particularly for houseboats, which he described as the crown jewel of Kashmir tourism. The delegation apprised the Lieutenant Governor that there is an urgent need to put in place a well-defined annual calendar for tourism promotion and related events. It was pointed out that at present tourism stakeholders receive invitations for participation at the eleventh hour, often just a day in advance, which makes meaningful participation difficult and undermines the purpose of such events. The delegation emphasised that a structured and pre-announced calendar would enable better planning, wider participation, and more effective promotion of Kashmir as a tourism destination. The delegation further requested that applications for renewal of registrations and licences, where all requisite documents have already been duly submitted, be deemed to be renewed on a provisional basis until final decisions are taken by the competent authority. The delegation also raised concerns regarding extension of lease deeds, issues faced by hotels under LCMA jurisdiction, infrastructure constraints in congested commercial areas such as Lal Chowk, fire safety requirements under Smart City projects, improved airport-level facilitation, waiver of municipal and allied fees for the hospitality sector. Raising another long-pending issue, the delegation strongly pressed for the announcement of a power amnesty scheme for commercial consumers. They highlighted that accumulated power dues, exacerbated by prolonged downturns in tourism, have placed severe financial stress on businesses. A one-time amnesty, they said, would help stabilize struggling establishments, encourage regularization of dues, and support the overall revival of the tourism economy in Kashmir. The Lieutenant Governor gave a patient hearing to the delegation and assured that the issues raised would be examined sympathetically. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to reviving tourism, improving ease of doing business, and ensuring that genuine stakeholders are facilitated through transparent and efficient systems. The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry expressed confidence that under the continued leadership of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Kashmir tourism will overcome present challenges and regain its growth trajectory. The Chamber assured its full cooperation with the administration in implementing reforms and revival measures in the larger interest of the economy and livelihoods of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
